Layering Systems: How to Layer Dog Apparel

Anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors knows that the weather can be unpredictable — one minute it can be warm and sunny, and the next, cold and rainy. And even if the weather stays consistent, being active means you’re likely shedding layers as you heat up or adding them as you climb in elevation.

If you can add and remove layers, why shouldn’t your dog be able to? The takeaway: Layering is key for keeping your dog comfortable on outdoor adventures.

Whether you're hiking in the mountains or exploring a local park, prepare your pup for any condition with the right layers. Let’s dive into the different types of layers and some go-to combos for your canine companion.

Different Types of Layers

When it comes to Ruffwear apparel, we organize our products into three layer categories: Insulated, Midlayer, and Shell.

  • Insulated: Designed for cold weather and provide warmth and protection from the elements
  • Midlayer: Add an extra layer of insulation and can be worn on their own or under a shell jacket
  • Shell: Waterproof and windproof, making them ideal for wet or windy conditions

How you layer will also depend on the fit of the dog coat or sweater. Our apparel comes in Formfitting, Regular Fit, and Relaxed Fit. Formfitting is snug and conforms to the body, Regular Fit is tailored with a bit of wiggle room, and Relaxed Fit is looser and drapes the body. Refer to the chart below for more information about each fit. If you’re not sure what the forecast has in store, bring multiple layering options to make sure you have all your bases covered.
